* G7 Nations comprising The world's richest countries committed to "any further action that may prove necessary" to restore confidence in the global financial system, their finance ministers said as they wrapped up a two-day meeting in Rome.

* Japan's gross domestic product slumped 12.7 percent for the fourth quarter in 2008, worst since 1974.

* On Tuesday, General Motors and Chrysler have to submit plans to the government that show how they plan to turnaround their troubled companies. GM needs more funds to survive, it also is considering bankruptcy as an option.
