News Today

* U.S. Treasury says it will make AIG pay taxpayers back for the $165 million in bonuses the insurer paid employees and deduct the money from the next $30 billion federal aid installment.

* Bailed-out insurer American International Group gave 73 of its employees bonuses of more than $1 million each, according to a letter that New York state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo sent Congress. full story

* Bank of Japan holds interest rates steady at 0.1%, says Economy to remain under stress.

* The World Bank has cut China's gross domestic product estimate for 2009 to 6.5%, a forecast that falls below the mainland's own projection of an 8% expansion this year.

* The IMF forecast that India's gross domestic product growth would slow dramaticallyto 6.3 percent in the 2008-2009 fiscal year, ending in March, and to 5.3 percent the following year.

* India's economic growth is likely to slow down further in 2009-10, to five per cent as against the Government's estimate of above seven per cent, Economist Intelligence Unit said today.

U.S. housing starts surged 22% in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 583,000, the Commerce Department estimated Tuesday.It was the largest percentage gain in 19 years and was the first increase in eight months in the sector.
