European Union leaders are meeting for an emergency summit in Brussels called by Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, amid growing fears that national protectionism will sabotage coordinated efforts to reverse the current economic decline.

* Gross domestic product, which measures the output of goods and services produced in the United States, fell at an annual rate of 6.2% in the fourth quarter according to a preliminary report.
